Jolted awake by the rough tap upon his shoulder, Dayne's heart surged with adrenaline for a moment. He could feel the cold rain beating down from the skies, harsh and unforgiving. Quick on his feet, Simeon had given orders for the young man to go off and gather the items needed for travel. Dayne followed the orders to a 't', leaping from the rear of the cart with sword on his belt, toward the edge of the forest. He didn't go far, no more than five foot inside the woods, to gather thick fallen branches and other small rocks they could use to brace the cart's travel in the slippery mud. After about three runs back to the forest's edge, Dayne had enough sticks and rocks to place in front of the cart, and then run to the rear and then the front once more. It was tiring, but it had some decent effectiveness, keeping the wheels dry and from sinking into the mud too much. Rolls Survival: 10

Their plan had worked, and they made slow progress that day. When it came time for camp, Simeon was grateful for the rest - they were already behind schedule, but at least they had kept safe for now. As they set up in the advantageous position, a crack sounded in the treeline. Simeon’s elf eyes turned immediately towards it, spotting the huge shape of a bear hiding there. He turned to Dayne immediately, his hand moving to the blade at his side. ”Bear - get in the cart,” he said, dashing to the side and positioning himself behind the cart. He drew his sword from its scabbard slowly, ears perked to listen for the sound of the approaching bear - and hopefully his retreat after his curiosity had been sated.

Luck would have it that the storm passed as the night grew closer. The warmth of the flame engulfed Dayne's wet clothes as he huddled close to the fire. Taking rations out he began to cook the meet, preparing himself for a nice relaxing night after the rough day's travel they had just experienced. Simeon's voice shattered Dayne's peace as he pointed to the edge of the thick forest. A crunching sound followed quickly with a few other signs of a creature lurking in the shadows. Before Dayne could realize what was happening, Simeon had already identified the beast and gave his orders. Dayne did not question, he leapt from the ground grabbing shield and sword. Hunkering down into the cart he prepared himself to spring on the bear when it drew near. Just as he did he heard Simeon's loud thud from slipping against the mud. Hopefully the bear wouldn't notice. Adrenaline surged through his body and his hand gripped the hilt of the scimitar so tight that the his fingernails flushed with red. One strike landed, blood flowing into the air and falling to the ground as the rain and down. His heart skipped, this wasn't like the bandits, he didn't have that shame or fear behind his swings. The fear of taking another's life. With newfound fortitude he remained close within the reach of the bear, fearing to turn his back on such a creature. "Oi!" The boy yelled as he pinched the bear between himself and Simeon. Another swing of his blade danced out from his flanking position, finding purchase in the rear of the beast. It roared out in pain as the blood flowed freely from the second wound. Dayne lifted his shield slightly, ready for the bear to attack. The wet ground gave no friction beneath Simeon's boot, and he fell face first into the mud. With a splutter hepushed himself up onto his knees, pulling his sword free from the mud it had threatened to get stuck into. The bear was on him a moment later, bearing down with its almighty bulk. And then Dayne leapt from the cart, his sword found the bear’s behind and caused a roar to fly from his saliva-dripping maw. Simeon forced himself to his feet as the bear turned to the younger man, his own sword coming down in a wide arc towards the wound already inflicted by his companion. Blood splattered through the wet night, but the bear wasn’t going to fall that easily. Simeon steeled himself, mud dripping from the side of his face. This was going to be a tough fight.

The roar that sounded from the beast's mouth shook Dayne to his core. Instincts took over as he tried to use what Simeon had taught him, but the bear was not another human. He dipped and slid through the wild slashes of the beast's claws, but struggled to find any openings to attack. ' They were in over their heads! Good, prove yourself. The voice whisper as the bear whirled back toward Simeon from the attack he had landed. Gritting his teeth the boy sprung his attack at that very moment! His sword drove itself, point first, into the shoulder blades of the brown beast. Fur split and hairs flew into the air. Instinctually the bear turned with incredible force, almost enough to rip the hilt from Dayne's hands, yet the boy's grip held true. Rolls Attack: 21 [Flanking advantage] Damage: 3

The boy fought hard, but this wasn’t a training ground spar. The bear’s claws were cold steel, and all it took was one slip for Dayne to fall victim to them. He fell to the ground, blood spurting from his chest as the bear ripped through him like scissors through paper. A cry of pain crashed over Simeon like a wave, but it didn’t send him stumbling back - instead, it pushed him on. With a roar of his own to hopefully bring the bear’s attention to him, he thrust his blade forwards into the bear’s hip. The sword passed clean through fur and muscle, the bear letting out a roar just like the two men. Simeon pulled his sword free quickly, the bear turning to look at him instead of at his downed companion. ”To me!” he shouted, hopeful that the noise would bring the bear towards him.

The searing pain coursed through his chest like a venom dripping through his veins. He felt every single movement, every beat of his heart, every breeze of the find. Death approached from the corner like an old friend, his cold grasp gripping at Dayne's heart with it's boney fingers. Not yet, the voice said in his ears, the tone much more pleased with Dayne's pain than anything else. Adrenaline surged through his veins just the same as the pain had done moments before. An external wind filled his lungs and his will to survival took over. "Argh!" He screamed, his main hand swinging with an unnecessarily wide arch. The blade once again met with the hide of the bear, sending it into a roar of pain and desperation as it's fur darkened with blood. Even from his position prone upon the ground, Dayne didn’t give up. His scimitar moved in a wide arc, catching the bear on its face and sending it stumbling backwards. Fear obviously gripped the creature as it turned away in terror, trying to get away from the sharp steel that was eating into its flesh. But Simeon wasn’t in a merciful mood. His sword pierced the base of the bear’s neck, just above its shoulder joint, passing clean into its chest cavity and into its heart. Its mouth opened in a final roar, but no sound came out - instead it merely slumped to the ground, blood pouring from its deathly wound. Simeon abandoned his blade within the animal, rushing over to where Dayne lay. ”Dayne!” he yelled, dropping to his knees kext to the boy. He gulped, but didn’t hesitate as he placed a hand over the boy’s chest. From the cart, the strings of his lute seemed to come alive as a strange wind blew over them. It wasn’t music, nor was it particularly melodious - but it was the sound of peace. Light flooded Simeon’s hand, before moving over the claw marks on Dayne’s chest. Milil’s blessing spread through the boy, sealing his wounds and revitalising him. With a sigh, Simeon slumped backwards. ”You did well, Dayne. You saved my life tonight.”

The bear had turned and Dayne collapsed onto his back side, his body sinking into the mud from the weight of his armor. As he hit the ground he could only watch in awe as Simeon swung down his weapon, taking the life from the beast with a final swing. They were lucky, managing to escape such a deadly foe with only a near death experience. The Paladin called out for Dayne, rushing toward him and placing his hands over Dayne's body. A warm golden glow surrounded the hands of the paladin and then slowly began to flow into and engulf the warrior's wound. Peace, that was the only word that could be used to describe the ambience and serenity that washed over Dayne. It was almost as if he did die, he would be okay with it. The sound of the lute was drowned out by the beat of his own heart for a period of time, but as the glow subsided he began to hear the ending strum of that fateful tune. Dayne once more gasped for air, a new wave of energy revitalizing him as he jolted off the ground. The distant visage of death faded away. Huffing with a great deal of exhaustion he looked over to the paladin who had healed him. " I guess we are even then," he said with a faint smile. " I'm done for the night, I need to rest." Heavy bags under his eyes showed the truth behind his words. " Mind taking first watch this time?" Rolls None. Healing Hands Received: +5 HP [12/12]
